Iowa postmortem

I have read and heard a lot of analysis of the results of the Iowa caucuses (cauci??) but one of the best I’ve seen so far is George Will’s comments on the two populists who finished first and second in their respective party races:

Huckabee says “only one explanation” fits his Iowa success “and it’s not a human one. It’s the same power that helped a little boy with two fish and five loaves feed a crowd of 5,000 people.” God so loves Huckabee’s politics that He worked a Midwest miracle on his behalf? Should someone so delusional control nuclear weapons?

Speaking of delusions, Edwards seems unaware that the world market sets the price of oil. He says a $100-a-barrel price is evidence of — surging demand in India and China? unrest in Nigeria’s oil fields? No, “corporate greed.” That is Edwards’ explanation of every unpleasantness….

Although Huckabee and Edwards profess to loathe and vow to change Washington’s culture, each would aggravate its toxicity. Each overflows with and wallows in the pugnacity of the self-righteous who discern contemptible motives behind all disagreements with them, and who therefore think opponents are enemies and differences are unsplittable.

While I applaud Huckabee’s stands on moral issues, I am troubled by his apparent cluelessness when it comes to foreign policy as well as his mindless echoing of the Democrats lines on economic policy…. advocating practical amnesty for illegal immigrants, attacking “the rich” as the source of every problem, advocating nationalized healthcare (read socialized medicine), his frequent support of tax increases as governor, to name a few examples.   I know that he claims that he hasn’t done these things, but his record speaks for itself.

I am really disappointed that Thompson hasn’t made more of an effort to get things going.  He was one person I could have supported enthusiastically, but it appears that the concerns about his unwillingness to do the heavy lifting needed to run a campaign have proven well founded.  I don’t expect him to still be around by the time of our Florida primary at the end of the month.

My one high point of the results was to see Hillary come in 3rd!  May that trend continue until she is gone!!
