What a week!

I know it’s now been a week since my last post… but a few things have happened in the meantime. We loaded up our truck and drove over 1200 miles to move from Michigan to Bradenton, FL. We had a few bumps on the trip itself (hitch ball on truck coming loose, blowing a tire on the truck on the outskirts of Bradenton) but we finally got here and found that our apartment complex is a beautiful place. We weren’t sure beforehand because we had done all the arrangements online and by phone and fax.

The challenge then has become how to fit all the stuff from a 4 bedroom house into a 1 bedroom apartment… (Hint: not very well!). We’ve been working all week on that and finally can begin to see the actual floor of our living room. We are having to put a lot of stuff into storage until we find a house after our 7 month lease is up. We’re just exhausted each night because of the physical demands of unpacking (coupled with the wonderful heat and humidity of a Florida summer) and this on top of working all day. I had orientation each day from Tuesday through Friday until 3:30 each afternoon and then we work on straightening out the apartment. Jacque has been doing the job hunt each day during business hours. Needless to say, we are glad to finally be reaching the point where we can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Orientation was great for me because it served as a refresher course of a lot of teaching concepts and practices that I know but have gotten out of practice in the 20 years I’ve been out of the classroom. Plus, it has helped me get a handle on the new evaluation standards that weren’t around 20 years ago (No Child Left Behind, Florida testing standards, etc.) I had a great session this afternoon with one of the experienced music teachers from the district who went over an extensive notebook that has been put together with all kinds of info relating to music programs and procedures in the district. I have a feeling I’ll be referring to that book a lot. I also was able to finally get into my school and get a look at my room for the first time. Next week we meet at the individual schools and start specific planning and preparation. I’m really looking forward to getting going!

Above all, we’re doing great. A little tired… but great. God continues to be GOOD and to provide all that we need exactly when we need it. What a faith-building experience this is turning out to be!

A little hint for everyone out there: Use some kind of tool when attaching a trailer hitch. Your hand does not qualify as a tool. Right pops?

  2. Jacque says:

yea Phil….but he thinks he’s superman & his hand is strong enough to attach the ball to the truck 🙂
    We love you Stephen!!

  3. J is for Joy says:

Are they forcing you to use any wacko teaching “methods” that some wacko has dreamt up or gotten from a Ouja board? Or, since your school is union free are you free from nonsense like that?
