“Illegal is not a race, it is a crime.” ~ Russell Pearce, author of Arizona illegal immigration bill
I think I will go out and buy a big jug of Arizona ice tea. For two reasons – 1) it is very refreshing on a hot day; and 2) to tweak the Leftists calling for a boycott of all things Arizona. In their hysteria these geniuses should check their facts. Arizona tea isn’t made in Phoenix… its made in Brooklyn.
Aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!
The screams and howls emanating from the Left directed against the state of Arizona would be comical if this wasn’t such a serious issue. Yesterday we were treated to the eminent legal scholars Shakira and Linda Ronstadt instructing us all on the fine points of immigration law and the Constitution. My reaction was much the same as in previous years when the oh so scholarly Barbra Streisand would try to instruct all of us rubes on the Constitution and international law: Shut up and sing!!
Listening to many of the talking heads on TV expound on how this makes Arizona the new home of the 3rd Reich reminds me of one of Mark Twain’s best lines: Better to be quiet and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!
People who claim that this law marks the full flowering of racism and fascism are proving that they know very little about either.
In the first place, what part of the word illegal in illegal immigration do these people not understand? Those who have reason to fear being stopped in Arizona are in that position NOT because they are Hispanic, but because they chose to skip that bothersome process to come here legally and want to jump to the head of the line in front of many people from all over the world. Pity the poor suckers who actually stand in line, fill out all the paperwork, wait their turn to have their case processed… you know, all that stupid legal stuff!
Is this process complex? Yes. Should it probably be made easier? Yes. Does that excuse those who choose to ignore the law and come here illegally? No!
Secondly, what so many of the screamers and howlers either haven’t bothered to find out or conveniently ignore is that individuals in the US who are not citizens are already required to have “papers” on them and produce them whenever requested by a law enforcement officer.
As Mark Steyn points out in his column What Arizona Must Live With:
As I write, I have my papers on me — and not just because I’m in Arizona. I’m an immigrant, and it is a condition of my admission to this great land that I carry documentary proof of my residency status with me at all times and be prepared to produce it to law-enforcement officials, whether on a business trip to Tucson or taking a 20-minute stroll in the woods back at my pad in New Hampshire.
Who would impose such an outrageous Nazi fascist discriminatory law?
Er, well, that would be Franklin Roosevelt. But don’t let the fine print of the New Deal prevent you from going into full-scale meltdown…
This is another case where the Left doesn’t let facts get in the way of a good slander. Whether its illegal immigration, global warming, financial “stimulus”, health care “reform” or countless other issues, the Left would rather demagogue anyone who dares disagree rather than actually deal honestly with the facts of the situation.
Finally, someone should read these Leftists the childrens’ story The Boy Who Cried Wolf. By constantly accusing anyone and everyone who dares disagree with them of racism, they are creating a situation where people are starting to tune it out whenever those accusations are made. Yes, there still is real racism in some quarters. However, by constantly crying “wolf”, Leftists will begin to find that when the wolf really comes, no one is going to pay any attention!
Disgusting display
William Bennett and Seth Leibsohn make the following excellent points:
Felipe Calderón has simply no business lecturing us, lecturing America, about our immigration policies. How does Mexico treat illegal immigrants? See Article 67 of Mexico’s General Population Law: “Authorities, whether federal, state or municipal . . . are required to demand that foreigners prove their legal presence in the country, before attending to any issues.” Now, the Arizona law, which we’ll get to in a moment, doesn’t even say this; there is no such language as “demand,” in Arizona.
But, first, here’s an Amnesty International press release from last month: “The Mexican authorities must act to halt the continuing abuse of migrants who are preyed on by criminal gangs while public officials turn a blind eye or even play an active part in kidnappings, rapes and murders.” Public officials — the government of Mexico — turns a blind eye. The AI report continues: “Migrants in Mexico are facing a major human rights crisis leaving them with virtually no access to justice, fearing reprisals and deportation if they complain of abuses. . . . Persistent failure by the authorities to tackle abuses carried out against irregular migrants has made their journey through Mexico one of the most dangerous in the world.”
So, illegal immigrants in Mexico face some of the most dangerous abuses in the world and they face reprisal and deportation if they complain. Further, there is “persistent failure” by the government of Mexico in stopping this. Felipe Calderón should be schooled on this, and until he is schooled on this, he should simply shut up about Arizona, about the United States — one of the safest places in the world for illegal immigrants and one of the most welcoming places in the world for legal immigrants.
And the One stood by nodding his head in agreement with this incredible hypocrisy. Revolting!!
